Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

4 slices of rye bread

4 slices of American cheese (or Swiss)

2 tablespoons butter (softened)

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Salt and pepper to taste

Optional: pickles for serving

Instructions

Sauté the Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook low and slow, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized and golden brown (about 15-20 minutes). Remove from skillet and set aside.

Prepare the Patties: In a bowl, combine the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently to combine and form into two equal-sized patties.

Cook the Patties: In the same skillet over medium-high heat, add the remaining tablespoon of butter. Once melted, add the beef patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, until they reach your desired doneness. Top each patty with a slice of cheese during the last minute of cooking to melt.

Assemble the Patty Melts: On a slice of rye bread, layer a cooked beef patty with melted cheese, followed by a generous spoonful of caramelized onions. Top with another slice of rye bread. Repeat for the second sandwich.

Grill the Sandwiches: Wipe the skillet clean and return it to medium heat. Butter the outer sides of the sandwich. Place both sandwiches in the skillet and grill until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side.

Serve: Remove from the skillet, cut in half if desired, and serve immediately with pickles on the side.

Prep Time: 15 minutes | Total Time: 45 minutes | Servings: 2 sandwiches
