When it comes to making French toast, the choice of bread is paramount. Using thick, high-quality bread like brioche or challah is crucial for achieving the perfect texture and flavor. Brioche, known for its buttery richness and soft crumb, lends a light and airy quality to the dish, allowing it to soak up the custard mixture without falling apart. Challah, on the other hand, offers a slightly sweeter flavor profile and a denser texture that holds up beautifully during cooking.

Ingredients

4 slices of thick bread (preferably brioche or challah)

2 large eggs

1/2 cup milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

2 tablespoons butter (for cooking)

2 tablespoons maple syrup (for serving)

Fresh fruits (such as strawberries, blueberries, or bananas) for garnish

Powdered sugar (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, brown sugar, and cinnamon until well combined.

Preheat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of butter, allowing it to melt and foam.

Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are well-coated, but allowing excess to drip off.

Place the soaked bread slices onto the hot skillet. Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and slightly crispy.

While cooking the second side, sprinkle a little extra brown sugar onto the top of each slice for caramelization. Press down gently with a spatula to encourage browning.

Once cooked, remove from the skillet and keep warm while you repeat with the remaining slices.

Serve warm, drizzled with maple syrup and topped with fresh fruits. Dust with powdered sugar if desired.
