Ingredients

For the Brownie Layer:

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

3/4 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/3 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

For the Cookie Layer:

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup chocolate chips (milk or semi-sweet)

Instructions

Prepare the Oven and Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8x8-inch baking dish or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.

Make the Brownie Layer: In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt the butter and chocolate chips together, stirring until smooth. Remove from heat and let cool slightly, about 5 minutes.

Mix in Sugar and Eggs: Stir in the granulated sugar until fully combined. Add in the eggs, one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract. Mix well.

Add Dry Ingredients: Sift in the flour, salt, and baking powder. Stir just until combined (do not overmix). Pour the brownie batter into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.

Prepare the Cookie Layer: In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until well combined.

Combine Dry Ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add this to the creamed mixture, mixing until combined. Fold in the chocolate chips.

Layer the Cookie Dough: Spoon the cookie dough over the brownie layer in the baking dish. You can either spread it evenly or drop spoonfuls on top of the brownies for a rustic look.

Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the edges are set and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs (not wet batter).

Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and let it cool in the pan for at least 15 minutes. Cut into squares and enjoy these delicious browkies warm or at room temperature!
